Vienna-based Bulgarian artist Michail Michailov presents his installation, part of the performance Self-Brainwashing which was held at the Venice Biennale on October 21 last year. The performance is part of his There You Are project that was selected for the Bulgarian pavilion of the Biennale in 2022. The exhibited requisite being on display over the Varusha South festival at Heerz Tooya gallery will be used for the closing event, which takes place on Sunday, August 20. Together with the artist Michail Michailov some twenty volunteers will participate in the execution of the performance Self-brainwashing happening in front of the church St. Konstantin and Elena, in collaboration with TAM. You are all very welcome to join for the event which will start exactly at 12am.

"The performance Self-brainwashing is related to the idea of concealing and obliterating the world existing around us, including the figure of the artist, and his transformation into something else, stimulating the research of new words through which to name it. The artist together with the other performers, dressed in a white protective suits, and the surrounding space are gradually immersed in an ethereal and perishable white foam - this action is accompanied by a specially created for the performance sound background by the Austrian artist Harald Stoyan.

The froth briefly takes us out of the familiar, the safe, out of the place where we think we are in cognitive comfort, sculpting the world in an inaccessible way. And it seems that the moment it begins to generate the process of Self brainwashing and we begin to forget the questions and answers we ask ourselves on a daily basis, it disappears and we go back to where we belong." - Irina Batkova

Живеещият във Виена български художник Михаил Михайлов представя своята инсталация, част от пърформанса "Self-brainwashing", който се проведе на Венецианското биенале на 21 октомври миналата година. Пърформансът е част от проекта му There You Are, който е избран за българския павилион на биеналето през 2022 г. Експонираният реквизит, изложен по време на фестивала "Варуша Юг" в галерия Heerz Tooya, ще бъде използван за закриващото събитие, което ще се състои в неделя на 20 август. Заедно с художника Михаил Михайлов около двадесет доброволци ще участват в изпълнението на пърформанса Self-brainwashing, който се случва пред църквата "Свети Константин и Елена" в сътрудничество с ТАМ. Всички вие сте добре дошли да се присъедините към събитието, което ще започне в неделя, точно в 12 часа.

"Пърформансът "Self-brainwashing" е свързан с идеята за скриване и заличаване на света, който съществува около нас, включително фигурата на художника, и превръщането му в нещо друго, което стимулира търсенето на нови думи, с които да го назовем. Художникът заедно с останалите изпълнители, облечени в бели защитни костюми, и околното пространство постепенно се потапят в ефирна и нетрайна бяла пяна - това действие е съпроводено от специално създаден за пърформанса звуков фон от австрийския артист Харалд Стоян.

Пяната за кратко ни извежда от познатото, безопасното, от мястото, където си мислим, че се намираме в когнитивен комфорт, извайвайки света по недостъпен начин. И сякаш в момента, в който започне да генерира процеса на самопромиване на мозъка и ние започнем да забравяме въпросите и отговорите, които си задаваме ежедневно, тя изчезва и ние се връщаме там, където ни е мястото.“ - Ирина Баткова

Michail Michailov (b. 1978, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria). He lives and works in Vienna and Paris. He studied at the Faculty of Visual Arts in Veliko Tarnovo (1999-2004) and Art History at the University of Vienna (2002-2007). From 2006-2009 he was working in cooperation with the Artist Group Gelitin. 2007 he participated in the Sommerakademie “Situation and Spectacle” at the Paul Klee Centre, Bern (lecturer: Cerith Wyn Evans). Besides several residences and awards he got the Drawing Now Paris Art Award (2018), the Austrian State Scholarship for visual art (2017), the Austrian graphic award/ lower austria (2015) and School of Happiness Award at Viennafair (2013). Last year Michailov was representing Bulgaria at the 59th International Art exhibition-La Biennale di Venezia (2022).

He has held solo exhibitions at Kunstraum Lakeside in Klagenfurt (2023); Projektraum Viktor Bucher in Vienna (2023) +359 Gallery in Sofia (2021); re.riddle gallery in San Francisco (2021); Projektraum Viktor Bucher in Vienna (2020); LLLLLLI in Vienna (2020); Drawing Lab Paris (2019); Kunsthalle Exnergasse (2019) Sotheby's Vienna (2016). Michailov’s works are held in permanent collections i.a. at Albertina Museum; the Artothek Collection of the Austrian Culture Office; the Collection of the City of Vienna; the Art Collection of Vienna Insurance Group and Dom Museum Vienna.

Михаил Михайлов (1978) е роден във Велико Търново, България. Живее и работи във Виена и Париж. Учил е във Факултета по визуални изкуства във Велико Търново (1999-2004) и история на изкуството във Виенския университет (2002-2007). В периода 2006-2009 г. работи в сътрудничество с Групата на художниците "Gelitin". През 2007 г. участва в Sommerakademie "Ситуация и спектакъл" в Центъра "Паул Клее", Берн (лектор: Серит Уин Евънс). Освен няколко резиденции и награди получава наградата за изкуство Drawing Now Paris (2018), австрийската държавна стипендия за визуално изкуство (2017), австрийската награда за графика/Долна австрия (2015) и наградата School of Happiness на Viennafair (2013).
